Alex Lebovic Foundation to Fund Veterinary Scholarship

Family members of Alexandra Lebovic recently launched the Alex Lebovic Foundation to fund the Alex Lebovic Veterinary Medicine Scholarship at the University of Florida’s College of Veterinary Medicine (UF CVM). The scholarship will be applied to at least one veterinary student each year as determined by the University of Florida Foundation.

“Cancer denied Alex her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian,” said Mitch Lebovic, Alex’s father and vice president of the Alex Lebovic Foundation. “By creating this scholarship, it is our hope to help others have the opportunity Alex did not while forever linking her name to the profession she loved.”

Alex grew up in Bel Air, MD and graduated from University of Maryland in 2017 with a degree in Animal Science. University of Florida was her first choice for veterinary school, so she moved to Florida in 2017 and was accepted in 2018 to UF CVM’s class of 2022. She was a first-year veterinary student when she died.

“The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine could not have been more supportive of Alex during her time in Gainesville and she truly loved being there,” Mitch said. “When it came time to decide where her legacy should be left, it was an obvious choice.”

Alex worked for several years in the veterinary profession both in Maryland and Florida. She started as a kennel worker at Bel Air Veterinary Hospital in Bel Air, MD and spent her college years as a veterinary technician and receptionist at Hyattsville Animal Hospital in Hyattsville, MD. Upon moving to Florida, she became a veterinary technician at VCA Noah’s Place Animal Medical Center in St. Petersburg and then a veterinary nurse at Northeast Animal Hospital, also in St. Petersburg. She also interned at the National Institutes of Health and worked as a research assistant at University of Maryland’s Department of Animal and Avian Sciences.
